“A show-stopping tenor” (Ludwig van Toronto), Canadian tenor Zachary Rioux is an artist whose voice has been praised as “excitingly powerful and resinous” (Parterre Box). In summer 2025, he completed a two-year residency with the Opernstudio of the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, where his mainstage assignments included Parpignol in La Bohème, Gherardo in Gianni Schicchi, Gastone in La traviata, the First Brabantian Nobleman in Lohengrin, and the Fourth Squire in Parsifal. He also appeared in Opernstudio scenes concerts as Ruggero in La rondine, Don José in Carmen, and Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur, as well as Ctésippe in the Staatsoper premiere of Fauré’s Pénélope and the title role in the children’s opera Max und die Superheld:Innen.

The 2025–26 season brought a series of significant international house and role debuts. He began by covering Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, where he also sang one performance, followed by tour appearances at the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse and with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra. Further highlights included Bravi! with Edmonton Opera and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, a return to the Bayerische Staatsoper as Altro contadino in Pagliacci, and Dvořák’s Stabat Mater with Concerts de l’Avent de Villars-sur-Glâne in Switzerland. He subsequently made his house and role debut as the Prince in Dvořák’s Rusalka with Nouvel Opéra Fribourg, culminating the season with his Vancouver Opera debut as Rodolfo in La Bohème.

Increasingly sought after for the lyrico-spinto tenor repertoire, Rioux has received particular acclaim for his portrayal of Rodolfo. His professional role debut with Manitoba Opera was praised by Opera Canada for his “resonant, fully rounded tones, even range and heroic delivery,” a success he followed with an acclaimed Vancouver Opera debut in the role. His upcoming engagements include another house and role debut at Garsington Opera in May 2027, where he will sing Steuermann and cover Erik in Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer.

A prize winner in several international singing competitions, Rioux received a Talent Development Award at the Neue Stimmen International Singing Competition in Germany, Second Prize at the Mario Lanza Competition in Philadelphia, and Gold Medals at both the Rising Stars Grand Prix International Music Competition in Berlin and the Vienna International Music Competition.

His artistic development has included residencies at leading young artist programs. As a Resident Artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, his leading roles included Rodolfo in La Bohème and Lensky in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. He was also a Young Artist at the Glimmerglass Festival, where he performed the Marquis in John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles, and participated in the Internationale Meistersinger Akademie. His concert repertoire includes Handel’s Messiah and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

Zachary Rioux holds a Performance Certificate from the Academy of Vocal Arts and a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from The Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
