“A show-stopping tenor” (Ludwig van Toronto) Zachary Rioux is a Canadian tenor who is currently part of the Opera studio of the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. In the 2024-25 season, he will be making his professional role debut as Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème with Manitoba Opera. As a second year member of the Opera studio of the Bayerische Staatsoper, he will appear in Lucia di Lammermoor, Aida, Lucrezia Borgia, Das Schlaue Füchslein, Don Carlo, and in a premiere of Fauré’s Pénélope.
Season 2023-24 at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Zachary’s roles included the title role in Max und die Superheld:Innen, Parpignol in La Bohème, Erster Brabantischer Edler in Lohengrin, Gherardo in Gianni Schicchi and Un venditore di canzonette in Il Tabarro’s Trittico, Vierter Knappe in Parsifal, Bruto in Respighi’s Lucrezia, and Gastone in La traviata, as well as in scenes concerts where he performed as Ruggero in La Rondine.
Zachary was a prize winner at Neue Stimmen in 2022, has won second prize at the Mario Lanza Competition in Philadelphia, a Gold Medal (High Distinction) at the Rising Stars Grand Prix International Music Competition Berlin, and a Gold Medal at the Vienna International Music Competition. As a Resident Artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts, he was seen on stage as Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème, and as Lensky in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. In the 2022-23 season, he performed as Cavaradossi in Tosca with Toronto City Opera, covered the same role with Edmonton Opera, and performed in Handel’s Messiah with L’Orchestre classique de Montréal and with Symphony New Brunswick. Along with Neue Stimmen, his summer of 2022 included participating at the Internationale Meistersinger Akademie (IMA).
Around the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Zachary performed as the Prince for an online performance of Dvořák’s Rusalka, and performed in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in Toronto at The Royal Conservatory of Music’s Koerner Hall. Before the pandemic, his operatic experience includes his 2018-19 season, where he performed as Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte three times, with Toronto City Opera, Brott Opera, and the Glenn Gould School Opera, respectively, and was a Young Artist at the Glimmerglass Festival where he performed as the Marquis in Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles.
Zachary holds a Performance Certificate from the Academy of Vocal Arts, and a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music.
