Bass-baritone Pete Thanapat is the second prize winner of the Debut Competition 2024 in Germany. Beginning in the 2025/26 season, he will join the ensemble of Oper Frankfurt, where he is set to make role debuts as Angelotti in Tosca,  the Helmsman in Tristan und Isolde, Johann in Werther, Corebe / Fauno in Amor vien dal destino, the Sergeant in Manon Lescaut and Curio in Giulio Cesare.

Recent engagements include the role of Roucher in André Chénier at the Opéra de Lyon and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, as well as the bass solo in Verdi’s Requiem alongside renowned soprano Krassimira Stoyanova at the March Music Days in Ruse, Bulgaria. Pete will return to the Bregenz Festival in summer 2026 to portray Marchese d’Obigny in La Traviata on the Seebühne.

In 2024, Pete was a finalist in the 6th Eva Marton International Singing Competition. In 2022, he participated in the prestigious Young Singers Project at the Salzburg Festival. That same year, he reached the final round of Neue Stimmen, was a finalist at the 40th International Belvedere Singing Competition, and won second prize at the 26th International Ferruccio Tagliavini Competition. He previously received the Perry Nelson Prize at the 11th International Hilde Zadek Singing Competition in 2019 and took part in SWR Junge Opernstars 2023 in Kaiserslautern and Landau.

From 2022 to 2024, Pete was a member of the Lyon Opera Studio, where he performed Biterolf in Wagner’s Tannhäuser, the Grand Prêtre in Hérodiade (also covering Phanuel), and multiple roles in Candide (Tsar Ivan, Inquisitor, Croupier, Señor). His repertoire there also included Antonio in Le Nozze di Figaro, the One-Armed Man in Die Frau ohne Schatten, Larkens in La fanciulla del West, and Don Pedro in Béatrice et Bénédict. At the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, he appeared as Quinault in Adriana Lecouvreur.

Earlier performances include Marco in Gianni Schicchi at the Bregenz Festival and the Woodcutter in Die Königskinder at the Tyrolean Festival. As part of the Salzburg Festival’s Young Singers Project, he portrayed the Devil in Stefan Hanke’s The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs. He made his international debut in 2014 as Maestro Spinelloccio and the Notary in Gianni Schicchi at the Summer Opera in Bergenhus Fortress, Norway, and has regularly appeared as a soloist at Salzburg Cathedral.

Pete holds a master’s degree from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he studied under KS Krassimira Stoyanova and KS Angelika Kirchschlager (Lied). He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University Mozarteum Salzburg, studying with Prof. Mario Diaz and Prof. Pauliina Tukiainen. Born in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1995, Pete speaks Thai, English, and German, has basic knowledge of Italian, and is currently studying French and Russian.
