Considered one of the finest countertenors of his generation, Gabriel Díaz performed under conductors such as Jordi Savall, Ivor Bolton, Ruben Jais, Lionel Meunier, Andrea Marcon, Jana Semerádová, Leonardo García Alarcón or Andreas Spering.
His engagements for this season include a tour in Switzerland, Belgium and Germany with La Cetra Barockorchester Basel under the baton of Andrea Marcon, Haendel’s Messiah with Orquesta Ciudad de Granada and his debut in Festival Potsdam Sanssouci singing the role of Galafro in Steffani’s Orlando Generoso. His first CD with a selection of Haendel’s Cantatas will be released at the end of this season.
Recent engagements include the title roles of Corselli’s Achille in Sciro and Haendel’s Orlando at Teatro Real de Madrid under the baton of Ivor Bolton. Gabriel took part in a staged production of Bach’s Saint John’s Passion directed by the English choreographer Peter Leung and sang the role of Giovanni in the world premiere in modern times of Maria Vergine al Calvario by the italian composer Gaetano Maria Schiassi under the baton of Fernando Migue Jalôto in Lisbon. He debuted as well at the Teatr Krolewski in Warsaw singing the role of Ircano in Semiramide riconosciuta by Leonardo Vinci under the baton of Marco Vitale. Previous engagements include the role of Andronico in Haendel’s Tamerlano with the French Orchestra Les Ambassadeurs and conductor Alexis Kossenko at the Poznan Opera House, the role of Galatea in Haendel’s Aci, Galatea e Polifemo conducted by Andreas Spering in Seville, Medoro in La Lisarda by Giovanni Battista Mariani with Rogerio Gonçalves in Donaufestwochen (Austria), the role of La Peinture in Charpentier’s Les Arts Florissants in the Festival Musika-Musica in Bilbao under Josetxu Obregon, Pastore in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo in Paris Opéra Comique under Jordi Savall.
Gabriel’s repertoire and interest also include contemporary music. His has sung the role of El Comisario in Luis de Pablo’s El Abrecartas under Fabián Panisello and El Sapo in Marisa Manchado’s La Regenta under Jordi Francés, both in Teatro Real de Madrid, Until the Lions with music of Vincenzo Lamagna with Akram Kahn Company, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Johanne’s Passion by Arvo Pärt, both with Sociedad Musical de Sevilla. Upcoming engagements include Bernstein’s Missa Brevis for solo countertenor and choir with Spanish Nacional Choir and a concert with Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia performing the piece Three sonnets for Michelangelo by Gabriel Erkoreka.
Gabriel has taken part in many recordings for Almaviva, Alia Vox, Enchiriadis, Arsis, NB Musica, Ricercar, Lauda Musica and Alpha, some of them winners of awards such as the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Critics’ Choice Gramophone, 5 Diapason, Diapason d’Or and FestClásica.
