Lauded by The New York Times as a “vibrant and dark-toned, agile mezzo-soprano,” Hyona Kim’s engagements in the 2026/27 season include her return to Korea National Opera as Eboli in Verdi’s Don Carlo, a cover of Amneris in Aida at the Metropolitan Opera, and her debut as Marcellina in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at LA Opera.

In the 2025/26 season, she made her Metropolitan Opera and Irish National Opera debuts as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, appeared as Mrs. Quickly in Falstaff at LA Opera, and performed Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde at Korea National Opera.

Her recent engagements included Suzuki in Madama Butterfly with the Royal Danish Opera, LA Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, and the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra; Amneris in Aida at Opera Maine and she joined the Metropolitan Opera covering Eboli in Don Carlo and Venus in Tannhäuser. Hyona also made her San Francisco Opera debut in a leading role as Lady Wang in the world premiere of Bright Sheng’s Dream of the Red Chamber, earning critical acclaim from the San Francisco Chronicle as an “unstoppable powerhouse.”

Her career has taken her to New York City Opera, Romanian National Opera Cluj-Napoca, Opera Carolina, Opera Lancaster, and Opera Company of Middlebury, among others. Her repertoire includes Azucena in Il trovatore, Mrs. Quickly in Verdi’s Falstaff, Hermia in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Wowkle in La fanciulla del West, and Olga and Larina in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.

Kim was a member of the ensemble of Dortmund Opera from 2018 to 2023, where her roles included Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Tzippie in Oliver Knussen’s Where the Wild Things Are, the title role in the German premiere production of Frédégonde by Ernest Guiraud, Paul Dukas, and Camille Saint-Saëns, Nancy Tang in John Adams’s Nixon in China, Ortrud in Lohengrin, and Amneris in Aida.

Passionate about chamber music and art song, Kim has appeared in concerts and recitals with the Mannes Baroque Chamber Players, the Guinness Quartet as part of Viva Virginia, the International Festival of Music, and Ensemble 212. Her concert repertoire includes Mahler’s Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3, Das Lied von der Erde, and world premieres for chamber orchestra by Yoon Jae Lee. She has participated in Stephanie Blythe and Alan Smith’s Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar and performed with the Brooklyn Art Song Society in its concert series dedicated to Les Six, Francis Poulenc, and Mahler. She made her Carnegie Hall debut with the New England Symphonic Ensemble, singing the alto solo in Vivaldi’s Gloria.
